1st XI
West Mid Div 2
Away vs Chaddersly Corbett
Drew 2 - 2 (Seb Lewis, Liam Roberts)

Barlaston were frustrated by conceeding a last minute equaliser in a game they should have secured after creating but missing a number of excellent chances. A goal on debut from Liam Roberts and a reasonable performance were the positives to take from the afternoon's work.

Rob Bagshot should have opened the scoring in the first twenty seconds of the game as Chaddersly ceeded possesion straight from the push-back, but his powerful shot blazed over the crossbar and out onto the surrounding football pitches. Bagshot's miss was made all the more painful when the home side took the lead after ten minutes with a well executed dragflick from their first short corner.

Seb Lewis put Barlaston back on equal terms midway through the half when he intercepted a clearance, jinked past a couple of challenges and slotted home from five yards out.

The second period saw Barlaston create a number of excellent chances with Tom Simcock failing with three efforts, Bagshot with two and Brett Youngman and Richard Lewis weighing in with a spurned opportunity each. Simcock made some ammends when his determined break from midfield and deft through ball invited Roberts to run through on goal and finish calmly to give Barlaston the lead with fifteen minutes remaining.

Further chances to close the game out came and went, with Seb Lewis seeing a short corner strike well saved and Roberts blotting his copybook somewhat with two fluffed attempts. Chaddersly were still in the game, however, and caused enough panic for Richard Lewis to conceed a late short corner which was dispatched in a carbon copy style to the opener to snatch a point for the home side.

1st XI

Home vs Yardley

Won 10 - 0 (Seb Lewis 3, Rob Bagshot 2, Tom Simcock 2, Steve Collins, Brett Youngman, Mark Rushton)

Barlaston eased past a struggling Yardley side with a hat-trick from Seb Lewis, braces from Rob Bagshot and Tom Simcock and a very very rare strike from veteran defender Mark Rushton.

Lewis opened the scoring from the first short corner of the game with a drag flick that beat the keeper at the near post. A defensive lapse let Lewis in again minutes later as he fired high into the net from the edge of the 'D' to double the lead. The contest was effectively ended when Bagshot pounced on a rebound from the Yardley keeper's pads and converted from close range.

Steve Collins and Bagshot both finished off good moves with tidy conversions to extend the lead to five, prompting Rushton to venture out of defence in search of scoring glory. After a couple of incursions ended damply he finally poached his goal when he diverted an already goal bound effort from a short corner right at the end of the half.

Lewis converted another short after the restart with Simcock getting in on the act and adding two strikes of his own from shorts. Brett Youngman completed the scoring with an accomplished far post finish for the best goal of the game just before the final whistle.

Friendly Fixture
Home vs Derby University
Drew 2 - 2 (Seb Lewis, Richard Lewis)

Barlaston ended their run of three straight defeats with a late equaliser from Richard Lewis in a friendly match against Eastern division opponents, but a poor performance and the continuation of some very poor finishing leaves skipper Mark Roe with some dificult issues to address.

The home side took the lead midway through the first half when Seb Lewis reacted to a defelected cross into the Derby 'D' and fired a quick shot under the keeper. The advantage was not rammed home, however, as a sucession of excellent chances went begging with Oliver Holland, Brett Youngman and Gareth Morris all failing when presented with glorious opportunities. The powerful Derby midfield started to wrestle control of the game and Morris was called upon to make a couple of goaline stops towards the end of the period as he defended his post against a barrage of short corners.

It wasn't long after the restart that the tide of Derby pressure and short corners resulted in an equaliser. Mark Roe made an instinctive save from a lifted strike only to see the rebound smashed past him and into the top of the net. Derby continued to have the better of the play until they eventually took the lead on the hour through another short corner strike. Roe could do nothing to prevent the goal as the ball was moved around the top of the 'D' to slapped home from an angle.

Despite being under pressure Barlaston were still creating and missing chances in an open game, with Seb Lewis, Mark Rushton and Rob Bagshot embarassing themselves in front of goal before Richard Lewis took matters into his own hands and drove into the Derby circle from the inside left position and hammered a reverse stick shot into the far corner. There was barely time to restart the game as the home side breathed a sigh of relief, but Roe will be only too aware that performances and particularly finishing must improve.

25th October 2008

1st XI
West Mid Div 2
Away vs Kingswinford
Lost 6 - 1 (Seb Lewis)

Barlaston suffered another heavy defeat against a clinical Kingswinford side as they were given a lesson in finishing and stick control.

Despite starting with some long periods of ball retention and being the fitter side Barlaston were left floundering and chasing the game after just fifteen minutes as their hosts built an early three goal advantage. They were left scratching their heads as every Kingswinford attack seemed to result in a well taken goal while at the other end Rob Bagshot and Liam O'Brady were fluffing one-on-ones with the keeper and Brett Youngman was firing wide of the mark.

Youngman redeemed himself somewhat with a left wing surge and a pinpoint cross that presented Seb Lewis with a chance from the penalty spot. Lewis beat the keeper in the top corner to briefly ignite thoughts of a comeback, but they were soon quashed by a Kingswinford short corner strike just before the break.

The second period saw some improvement for Barlaston but still too many easy passes were going astray. Lewis and Gareth Morris went close from short corners but Kingswinford emphasized the difference between the sides with two more clinical finishes from open play moves to complete the rout.

Keeper Mark Roe only made one save all game as they quality of the home sides foward play repeatedly bypassed him and reduced his involvement to retrieving the ball from the back of the net. Since their first game win over Stafford Barlaston have gone into sharp decline, shipping fourteen goals in three games and scoring just one. Roe must hope that the men in front of him can up their technical skills with immediate effect, otherwise some similarly painful afternoons lie in store.

1st XI

West Midlands Div 2

Home vs Streetly

Lost 7 - 0

Barlaston were comprehensively beaten by a far superior side, shipping four goals in the first period and three in the second, but could take some solace in an improved performance and some important steps taken on their learning curve as they continued to battle against their accomplished opponents.

The game was over as a contest as early as the twentieth minute as two short corner strikes and an open play goal saw Streetly effectively over the winning line with a three goal advantage. A fourth just before the break ensured that the home side were in damage limitation mode for the second period.

Barlaston improved after the restart and managed to match the league leaders for extended periods with some reasonable ball retention, but their was much more quality and threat about the visitors when in possession and they added two excellent open play goals midway through the half.

Veteran defender Mark Rushton endured a particularly humiliating afternoon as he flailed around trying to shackle Streetly's experienced centre forward. Rushton's young centre back partner, Richard Lewis, was forced to bail him out on numerous occasions but could do nothing to prevent a heinous error gifting Streetly their seventh right at the death. Rushton, in cahoots with keeper Mark Roe, attempted to shepherd a ball over the back line, but were left embarrassed as the winger nipped between them and diverted the ball across the goal into the path of the unmarked number 9 to tap in from point blank range and put the seal on a painful scoreline.

4th October 2008

1st XI
Body Kraft West midlands Div 2
Home vs Stafford
Won 3 - 2 (B. Youngman, S. Lewis 2)

Barlaston scraped a win against a superior Stafford side courtesy of a late fightback after falling 2 goals behind with just 15 minutes to play.

Stafford should have had the game sealed in the first 20 minutes but could not make their domination count as Barlaston skipper Mark Roe made a string of excellent saves and his defence battled manfully around him. The only threat to the Stafford goal came from a short corner strike from Seb Lewis which was well saved ensuring the half ended goalless.

Stafford continued to press the home defence after the restart and eventually broke the deadlock with a short corner goal after 50 minutes. They extended their lead 5 minutes later with a well worked open play move and a deft finish.

Barlaston finally woke up and started to create some pressure with some dubious tackling and some strong running in midfield from Gareth Morris and Tom Simcock. Morris started a move that saw Rob Bagshot fire a shot against the keepers pads. Brett Youngman pounced on the rebound and put a reverse stick strike high into the net.

The home side continued to push for the equaliser and got on equal terms with 7 minutes remaining when Seb Lewis converted a short corner with a drag flick that was deflected past the keeper.

Lewis then turned in a Bagshot cross with just 2 minutes on the clock to see the home side take the lead. Stafford really should have salvaged a point at the death from a short corner but their centre forward inexplicably shot wide with the goal at his mercy.

Barlaston could take some pride in their never say die attitude but the standard of play needs to improve if they are to progress in the league this season.

Tymons Perfects 'Glamourous Assistant' Role

The new season started this weekend with much huffing and puffing as Coach Lewis put the playing squad through some fairly gentle paces at the 'Theatre of Follow Through' Alleynes High School Astrotastic Arena. A reasonable turn out of players were subjected to two laps of the pitch and some cheesy sumo-stretches before their techniques were tested with some 'dribble through the cones' challenges. Results were mixed with Mark Rushton sitting the last couple of runs out complaining of 'twisted blood' while Ben Forrester took a nasty tumble during the complicated Indian dribble section. His prostrate form came in handy as an extra cone.

More technical challenges followed with the 'shoot into an empty net' exercise. An impressive shot completion percentage of 4% was achieved leading to some serious high-fiving and "Good hustle" cries.

It was during the 'shoot into an empty net' practise that John Tymons found his true vocation - acting as the Glamourous Assistant to Coach Lewis. Tymons flounced round behind the empty goal in his fetching Upper Rimmington RUFC 3rd XI top, which was nicely set off by his Senior Citizen Gardeners Knee Protectors. His outfit was exquisitely finished with a pair of NCB surplus yellow shovelling gloves and some bright blue knickerbockers. A true vision in anyone's book. Between poses Tymons endeavoured to return the wayward shots from behind the empty net so that the shooting practise could continue ad nausaem.

The closing chapter of this athletic master class came in the form of a 13-a-side full contact battle-off. A shortage of bibs meant that it became 'bibs & skins' stick. The sight of Nick Gunns sculpted abs and Dick Lewis' bulging muscle-bib was too much excitement for some and the kit committee have since been sent out to purchase extra bibs.

The battle started in the business as usual manner for 1st XI skipper and netminder Mark Roe with a massive megs leading to an opening goal from Mark Milnes. A whole bunch of other poor play happened and it finished 4 - 1 to 'bibs & skins', with Coach Lewis left shaking his head at the 'progress' made.

Still, there's always next week and the cones and new, improved bibs will be back in action this coming Saturday with another punishing session scheduled for 2pm. The rumour mill has it that messers Bates, Cairns, Sambrook and Amison may turn out. Further stretching the bounds of credulity is the prospect of an appearance from 'Furious' Gareth Morris, who has spent the summer improving his whingeing and belly-aching technique at the expense of cricketing officials up and down the length of Staffordshire.

Player Performance Metrics

Dick Lewis - 6

Does not look good in a muscle-bib.

Mark Rushton - 4

Looks even worse in a muscle-bib. His moobs were seriously off-putting.

Nick Gunn - 8

'Gunny's ball' was a reassuringly regular cry.

Oliver Holland - 6

Some steady short-corner work pre-training could see him beating-off all comers for the receiving role.

Fred Marsden - 6

Stick of velcro, ball of sponge.

Jimmy Greenstick - 8

Good skills from the wee man with the dodgy looking shaft.

Brett Youngman - 5

All too willing to go 'skins' and show off his uncompleted body-art. Note to Youngman - tatts should be for bikers, convicts or sailors, not for Boyband milf hunters.

Tommy Simmycocky - 2

Training starts at 2pm.

John Davies - 8

May soon have to leave the Badgers fold as he is about to turn 24.

Nick Ruddick - 7

Some impressive cone rounding.

Mark Milnes - 10

Megs.

Mark Roe - 0

Megged

Coach Kavanagh - 6

Solid. As. A. Rock.

Gareth Davies - 6

Tenacious like a dog worrying sheep.

John Tymons - 9

Imperious at the back and out like Ussain Bolt when defending short-corners.

Guy Defendyman - 7

Ade Peacock must be proud of this no-nonsense backliner.

Ben Forrester - 1

Obviously hasn't heard of the FA's "Respec' da Game innint" campaign.

Josh Forrester - 6

Did the lions share of his brothers legwork.

Tom Boit - 5

Ronaldo-lite.

Paul Rushton - 3

Should never, ever again be allowed to leave his own 25.

Stupple twins - 0 & 7

One of the Stupple boys last year bowled out Coach Lewis with his filthy finger spin. That's the Stupple boy who has scored a big fat zero. The other Stupple boy, who keeps wicket, gets a 7.

Rob Bagshot - 5

Might have scored a goal which is why he gets a 5. Otherwise he was kept quiet by Mark Rushton which isn't much to be proud of.

Big Ron - 10

Listened well to team mates calling. And to opponents calling. And to umpires calling. And to London calling.

Summer Swans Season Review

5th September 2007

The Boys of Summer

It's been a long hard summer in BHC-land, with a whole bunch of precipitation making Tuesday nights the preserve of the hardy and stupid. Chris Amison has been an ever present.

Unperturbed by the inclement conditions there has been a summer season of sorts, with a few notable encounters of the 11-a-side variety and regular 'training' sessions on Tuesday evenings. Despite still not being able to find a coach the Tuesday sessions have been instructive in the extreme - if, that is, you want to be instructed in cheating, whingeing and bragging.

The full games have seen a new method of deciding the outcome of a hard fought 70 minute hackathon. If you don't like the actual scoreline simply invite the pools panel to sit and come up with a more palatable result. The panel overturned defeats at Winnington Park and North Staffs and has helped ensure an unbeaten summer season to date.

So just how have the individual summer regulars acquitted themselves in the off-season? Have they put in the hard yards in training? Have they performed to expectation in the big game environment? Or have they been flattered by the pool panel and bullied junior members? Ratings (out of ten) and slatings below;

Mark Roe  8

It's not too smart bad mouthing the new club skipper, especially not when you're an ageing and slowing midfield campaigner.

Luckily there's no need for badmounthing as Roe has been quite simply a revelation in the summer. He's kept nets in the games with his accustomed distinction, only suffering the nutmeg ignominy once at the hands of a Winnington under 9 player. Has also revealed a new string to his bow by venturing outfield during training, and proving that being keggy handed needn't be a disadvantage.

Richard Lewis  2

Some unspeakably biased umpiring displays have left Lewis in the doghouse this summer. Unable to play his way out of a paperbag he's resorted to commandeering the whistle and cheating scandalously. He is currently under investigation by the Serious Fraud squad following a particularly unsavoury award of 'feet' against John Tymons, who everyknows is exempt from this tiresome rule.

Nick Gunn  6

Scores well in the 'shouting Gunnys Ball' stakes and enjoyed a couple of classic moments when surging down the right wing at Winnington with their Under 9s cowering in his wake. Loses a couple of marks for a very bad habit of slying-off-without-paying-and-not-going-to-the-boozer. It's rumoured that his early departures have something to do with the waiting arms of a chick. Bad show.

John Tymons  8

Has added the Ronaldo step-over to his dazzling array of fancy footwork this summer. Was awarded the winning goal, with a cheeky little back heel, at Winnington after the pools panel decreed that he would eventually have been allowed to kick one in.

His hissy fit against North Staffs, when he threatened to go home when skipper Fred Marsden was unwilling to play 16 a side, was only trumped by his all out WWF attack on a tricky winger earlier in the season.

Mark Rushton  4

A number of lacklustre training displays were complemented by a display of fragility at Buxton, where he pulled up lame having 'done both hamstrings' which takes some doing while standing still.

His cameo as The Angry Umpire was perhaps his most valuable contribution to the season, whn he allowed Fred Funk to dribble the ball 3 yards over the back line before crossing for Rob Bagshot to convert a priceless equaliser. Rushton was only on whistling duties due to being incapacitated by a nasty insect bite, but managed to threaten and abuse most of the opposition before cheating them out of the previously mentioned equaliser.

Chris Longsdale  1

Toss. Found to be out of his depth a number of times during training sessions. Unable to convert a scoring opportunity even when alone, in space, in a cat-house with a paw full of twenty pound notes. Gets a single mark on the rate-o-meter thanks to some top-notch bragging.

Brett Youngman  3

Wearing muscle tops is never, ever going to be cool.

Drew Peacock  7

Gets a 7 for turning up every week even though his old man has been busy dragging the Peacock name through the mud with myopic umpiring and acts of random violence. Is currently pursuing a parental divorce in the high courts.

Chris Peacock  2

No dodgy umpiring call is below this chancer. Morals lower than a snakes belly. Gets 2 for having a very large ball sack.

Mark Milne  1

Missing four unmissable sitters in one game was the high point for Milne this summer. Has been more concerned with planning another raid on the oppositions teas than improving his hockey 'skills'. A move to the Vodafone call centre should allow him to tune his sledging and bad-mouthing techniques to perfection in time for the new league campaign.

Chris Amison  2

Another net minder trying his luck outfield with the real athletes. Can't be faulted for running round or shoulder barging, but makes Wassman look like Zidane when it comes to distributing the ball.

Dave Clowes  6

Has perfected the 'turn and burn' move during the summer season, leaving many opponents floundering in his wake.

Seb Lewis  9.5

Top scorer and top assister in the summer league. Continues to be linked with a move to Cannock.

Ian Kavanagh ZZZZZZero

You can write what you want about Kav. He can't use a computer and doesn't understand the internet. He's Penisauros Rex. A complete dillweed. He shaves with Rimmington Steele blades.

Big Ron McKinney 110

He always gives it so that's what he's getting scored at. Although he did only give 105% at one early season game. Perhaps he's losing his mojo.

Paul Rushton  3

The fragile Rushton Snr has made it through the summer season unbroken, but expect his brittle bones to be splintered and snapped before too long. North Staffs paramedics have been put on red alert for the forthcoming conker season, as Rushton is fully expected to end up in A+E when he tries to 'do' a 13-er with his prized 9-er.

Fred Marsden 10

Gets the full 10 for calling off the horror fixture away to Crewe Vagrants on a Friday evening. Has also impressed with his geographical smarts by thinking his holiday to Kephalonia meant a trip to South Africa.

Summer Swans Match Report & Player Ratings

Result vs Winnington Park, away 30th May 2007
Won 2 - 1 (Milnes, Tymons)

The mighty Swans took on the juvenile talents of Winnington Park last night at the luxurious environs of Middlewich Leisure Centre in a game which ended in a bizarre fashion and needed the pools panel to sit in order to produce a result.

The Swans were bolstered upon arrival by their opponents boasting an average age of 11.5. The phrase 'cannon fodder' could be heard whispering in the night air. However, some thoroughly abject performances from the majority of Swans meant that the young guns of Winnington were the only ones qualified to utter the fodder phrase.

New 1st XI skipper Mark Roe made a number of fine saves as the home side ran an ill-disciplined Swans defence ragged, with some composed footwork from uber-veteran John Tymons being his only help at the back. Roe repelled a number of short corner efforts but his colleagues were unable to spend any length of time in the opponents half and the pressure built throughout the half.

An inspired team talk from Swans skipper Marsden ensured that Roe was finally beaten early in the second period by a junior centre-forward measuring just 42 inches high. Nick Gunn made a few Forrest Gump surges but all to no avail as some surly footballers brought about an abrupt end to the proceedings after only 40 minutes play.

An irate Marsden called for the pools panel to sit and settle the result, and then pulled off his only ever tactical masterstroke when he populated the panel with messers Milnes, Green and Lewis Snr. The sage decision of the panel was a 2 - 1 away win, with the learned members arguing that Milnes fitness would have told in the latter stages of the game and Tymons would have unlocked the home defence with a subtle back heel right at the death.

Player Ratings

Mark Roe  7

Solid performance with some tidy saves recusing his errant defence on numerous occassions. Couldn't be faulted for the goal even though it was scored by an 8 year old who could have been crushed quite easily.

Chris Longsdale  2

Frequently out-strengthed by the aforementioned 8 year old. Would have merited extra marks but for the fact he looked like he was on a Gay Pride march with a pink tour shirt and bumble-bee socks.

Nick Gunn  5

Rescued his points score with some mightly macho shouting for the ball. There's a few under 10s who'll be having nightmares about the cry of "Gunny's ball" tonight. Didn't have a shower.

John Tymons  6

Assured footwork in the 'D' and reliable distribution from the back.

Richard Lewis  2

Unable to concentrate for any period of time due to new found 'man at leisure' status. Should get a job and show some positional discipline.

Big Ron McKierney 4

Guilty of only giving 105% and dealing with the bouncing ball in the same way he deals with it when batting. Clean bowled on at least five occassions.

Brett Green  3

Toss

Seb Lewis  9

Bossed the game and had the nicest kit. Also, best looking lad on the park.

Fred Marsden  3

Gets extra mark for cancelling horror fixture away to Crewe Vagrants on a Friday evening at the last minute. Otherwise, toss.

Dan Peacock  5

Unable to get fully involved due to an ongoing battle with an oversized gum-shield. Some nice touches but his Dad caused him problems with some myopic umpiring.

Mark Milnes  3

Bone idle performance from a self-styled scoring guru. Was guilty of daydreaming about his new cricket career. A career which will probably cause as much disappointment as his hockey equivalent.

Barlaston were beaten by a stronger side but are showing improvement and will feel aggrieved at the eventual margin of defeat.

Ludlow opened the scoring midway through the first period following a tight opening to the game. Keeper Mark Roe complained bitterly to the umpire feeling he had been impeded by the Ludlow centre forward as he desperately raced back to stop a goal bound effort, but the goal stood.

Barlaston complained again when a penalty stroke appeal was turned down and a fractious first half finished with Mark Rushton in the sin bin for foul language.

Ludlow gained full control of the match in the second period and extended their lead when some lax tackling allowed the right winger to drive into the 'D' and slot past Roe. A short corner strike sealed the game and a fourth was added just before the end when Rushton attepted an extravagant leave in his own 'D' which fooled no-one and allowed an unmarked centre forward to leisurely push into an empty net.

Lost 3 - 2 (Seb Lewis 2)

Barlaston paid for an inept first half performance that saw them fortunate to find themselves just 3 - 0
down and, although they rallied late in the game and could have forced a result, got exactly what they
deserved from the game - nothing.

A shaky start to the game, in which most of the outfield players were guilty of schoolboy errors,
wasn't helped when Rob Bagshot received a blow to the 'midrift' and was rendered ineffective for the
remainder of the contest.

Oswestry took advantage of the collective off-day and ran unopposed through the away sides defence to open
the scoring after 15 minutes.

Mark Rushton then embarked on a mad five minutes and gifted two short corner strikes to the opposition. He
made a very poor error of judgement in attempting to let a loose ball run out of play, and was punished
when the centre forward easily retrieved the ball and forced Rushton into a rash challenge to conceed a
penalty corner. The corner was weakly struck but crept in at the near post as Rushton had taken evasive
action and deserted his postition.

Within a few minutes the lead was increased to three when another short corner strike evaded Rushton. At
least this time he had stood firm defending his post but his attempt to stop the shot on the line was
amateurish at best.

The riot act was read during the interval and seemed to have some effect. Barlaston's play was still error
strewn but at least some extra effort forced Oswestry onto the back foot. Seb Lewis saw his poorly executed
drag flick bamboozle the goal keeper from Barlaston's first panalty corner award to give a glimer of hope on
the hour mark.

Ben Forrester and Tom Simcock then produced a rare moment of quality as they moved the ball rapidly
through the Oswestry ranks and provided Lewis with a clear shot on goal which he dispatched to make the
score 3 - 2.

Late pressure and a number of penalty corners right at the death could not provide an equaliser, and
Barlaston end the first half of the season in mid table and way of the pace for promotion.

Lost 4 – 2 (Richard Lewis, Rob Bagshot)

Despite having a lot of possession and creating
pressure Barlaston were given a lesson in swift
counter attacking and went down to four excellent
goals.

The tone of the game was set in the first ten minutes
as Barlaston created a good chance for Rob Bagshot,
who had his reverse stick shot well saved, only to see
Pershore break quickly, work the ball round the back
of the home defence and strand keeper Mark Roe with a
right wing cross that was converted from close range.
They repeated the dose with an almost identical move
just before the break to go into half time 2 – 0 up.

Barlaston, feeling aggrieved at the scoreline, started
the second period quickly and reduced arrears with a
goal from a very unlikely source. Rookie left-back
Richard Lewis looked as surprised as his team mates
were when he popped up in the opposition ‘D’ and
powerfully flicked home a loose ball for his first
ever senior goal. Lewis hadn’t previously in his
career had so much as a shot on goal.

Seb Lewis then saw a fierce short-corner strike hit
the base of the post and bounce to safety, but as the
home side pushed for an equaliser Pershore hit them
with two more quality moves and ended the contest.

Bagshot poked home a late consolation but despite
playing some accomplished hockey Barlaston could only
admire their visitors clinical finishing and rapid
ball movement.

Away vs Aston University
Won 4 - 1 (Bagshot 4)

Barlaston ran out comfortable winners but did not impress against struggling opposition.

Both sides had trouble getting to grips with a very difficult surface and play was generally scrappy. Barlaston took the lead after fifteen minutes when Rob Bagshot pounced on a rebound from the keepers pads and forced home from close range. Aston levelled the scores just before the break when a snapshot took Mark Roe by surprise in the Barlaston goal and found it's way between his legs into the net.

Neither side took the initiative after the break and it was only when Aston went down to ten men, following a nasty head injury, that Barlaston were able to pull away.

Bagshot scored three times in quick sucession to make the game safe. All three were similar close range strikes taking his tally for the season to eight and enabling Barlaston to cruise through the last ten minutes of the game against their depleted opponents.

Lost 1 – 0

Barlaston lost a closely contested encounter with Atherstone courtesy of a well taken short corner fifteen minutes from time, but their performances continues to improve.

The home side took the early initiative and Rob Bagshot shot inches wide after stealing the ball from the Atherstone defence. Gareth Morris then spurned an excellent chance from a short corner but Barlaston could not find the goal to make their early pressure pay.

Skipper Morris then put his side at a considerable disadvantage when he was sin-binned for the fourth time this season. He was off the field either side of half-time and the remaining ten men had to work exceptionally hard to hold out.

The deadlock was finally broken when Atherstone made one of a series of short corners tell and took the lead. Barlaston pressed hard for an equaliser, with Steve Collins having a glorious chance right at the death, but could not get back on terms and had to concede the points to their visitors.

Away vs Chaddersly Corbett

Won 3 – 1 (Rob Bagshot 2, Seb Lewis)

Barlaston stopped their slump of three successive defeats with their best performance of the season, easing to a comfortable victory over Chaddersly.

Barlaston pressurised from the off and within two minutes had won a penalty stroke following good work from Tom Simcock and Brett Youngman. Seb Lewis dispatched the stroke high into the net to open the scoring.

Late in the first half skipper Gareth Morris sent a hopeful ball down the left touchline which everybody except Rob Bagshot had given up on. Bagshot just kept the ball in play and advanced into the home side’s ‘D’ before striking a mishit shot past the surprised goalkeeper to extend the lead to two.

Within a minute of the restart Chaddersly reduced arrears when they forced home a short-corner following a frantic scramble on the goal line. Bagshot restored the two goal cushion with fifteen minutes to go when he cleverly diverted a loose ball in the ‘D’ underneath the advancing ‘keeper and just inside the post.

Barlaston squandered a number of excellent scoring opportunities and should have put the game completely out of their oppositions reach. They  very nearly had to endure a tense last few minutes but for Tom Pilling making an excellent head high reverse stick save from a powerful flicked shot. It capped Pilling’s man of the match performance.

Home vs Bloxwich

Won 3 – 2 (Pierchalla 3)

Pierchalla rolls back the years with three solo goals covering a combined yardage of 270. The ageing striker is believed to have popped 14 Viagra tablets on the eve of the game and turned up 'full of beans' and ready for action on the Saturday afternoon. Three devastating surges later he'd claimed another hat-trick and was said to be beaming from ear to ear come the end of the game.

3rd XI

Home vs Market Trumpton

Lost 2 - 0

Tim Gray's brave battlers had to concede defeat against a strong Trumpton side but the game was more remarkable for the umpiring debut of Nick 'I am the Law' Gunn. Gunn took on whistling responsibilities and entered the twilight world of umpiring Nick Walker and his homicidal tendencies. Walker attempted to dish out one of his 'full' decapitations (ie one that starts at the knees) but Gunn was having none of it. Walker was banished from the game and sent to bed without his tea by the power crazed Gunn.

Home vs Kynoch

Lost 2 – 0

Barlaston toiled in vain trying to break down an under strength Kynoch side and slumped to their third successive defeat due to two second half strikes.

The home side started well and took advantage of some open spaces in the visitors ranks, but could not make early pressure pay. Skipper Gareth Morris went closest when he drove a shot straight into the keepers pads following good work from Tom Simcock.

Kynoch threatened more as the half wore on and forced a number of short-corners, none of which were converted as Barlaston ‘keeper Mark Roe continued his excellent early season form. Mark Rushton was forced into an agricultural challenge to halt the visitors centre forward as he bore down on Roe’s goal and was sent to the sin-bin for his troubles, but neither side was able to break the deadlock before the break.

Kynoch finally made one of their short-corners count early in the second period as a well worked move was ended with a near post turn in. The home side continued to press for an equaliser with Morris, John Handycock and Rob Bagshot all going close. However, Kynoch sealed the victory with a swift counter attacking move late in the game leaving Barlaston’s promotion hopes seriously dented.

Away vs Ludlow
Lost 2 - 1

Barlaston suffered last minute disappointment when they conceeded from a short corner to surrender all three points to a young Ludlow side after holding out for long periods with only nine players.

The game started well for Barlaston when Rob Bagshot was on hand to pick up a Brett Youngman right wing cross and smash a rising shot into the roof of the net after ten minutes. They held on to the lead until the half time break, but things gradually unravelled from that point on.

Shortly after the restart the visitors found themselves reduced to nine men when Youngman and skipper Gareth Morris both received their marching orders following the same incident. Youngman was first to go, having been adjudged guilty of a stick tackle and in the resulting debate Morris was also dismissed for foul language. The nine men held on grimly but saw the scores levelled when a freehit from the left was turned in following a goal mouth scramble.

Ludlow continued to swarm all over the visitors pressing for a winner but some excellent goal keeping from Mark Roe, and resolute defending from Richard Lewis looked to have earned a point until a hotly contested short-corner award right at the death. The penalty looked to have been wasted when the tamely struck first shot was repelled by Roe but a frantic melee from the rebound was eventually forced in to give the home side a last gasp winner and leave Barlaston fuming at some erratic umpiring.

Lost 2 - 0

Barlaston disgraced themselves with a fractious and occassionally violent display against local revals Stafford and surrendered their 100% record in the Coaching Solutions league.

Despite starting well the home side could not make a number of good oppurtunities count. Seb Lewis saw a short corner well saved and Rob Bagshot failed to convert a one-on-one chance. The visitors composed themselves and from midway through hte first half took command of the game. After Ben Ellis had turned two goal bound short corner strikes off the line Stafford opened the scoring with a well worked near post turn in from a third penalty corner.

Barlaston's discipline began to crumble as frustration at their worsening performance took hold. First skipper Garteh Morris talked himself into the sin-bin and shortly before half time Lewis followed suit, being punished for some retalliatory 'gut-barging' and industrial language.

The second half saw no improvement as Stafford found more and more gaps in the under manned Barlaston formation. Even when at full strength the home side floundered and provided very little in the way of attacking threat or defensive resistance. It was no surprise when Stafford sealed the win with a nicely taken goal with five minutes to go.

There was still time for Bagshot to get himself dismissed with an oafish shoulder charge that saw his opponent sprawling to the turf. All in all a very poor day for Barlaston, who must improve in all areas if their campaign is not to turn very sour very quickly.

Lost 5 - 1

Cairns' consolation penalty flick was the only highpoint in a woeful 2nd XI display that saw Rich Lewis outwitted in the sledging department and Coach Kavanagh once again vomiting on the pitch following a big slice of ale-pie in the hostelries of Penkhull the previous evening.

3rd XI
Home vs Streetly
Lost 3 - 0

The Third XI turned out a side with an average age of 35. Ten playing members were under 17 and the eleventh was Tymons. There was much to enjoy from this embryonic side, despite suffering a 3-nil reversal at the hands of bigger boys. Some strong running down the right flank and some excellent deliveries into the box from Mike Newboy and some determined surges through the centre from Tom Boit gave the visitors much to think about. It was Josh Forrester, however, who took the MotM plaudits with some pugnacious tackling from left back, leaving his older brother Ben under no doubt that his first team place is under threat from the younger sibling.

Away vs Yardley
Won 3 - 1 (S. Lewis 2, Bagshot)

Barlaston made hard work of beating a depleted Yardley side but eventually came away with all three points thanks to an excellent Rob Bagshot strike and two fortuitous goals from Seb Lewis.

Barlaston started very slowly and only some alert defending from Tom Pilling saved them from conceeding an early goal. They gradually got into the game and started exerting some pressure on the Yardley defence and in the fifteenth minute Rob Bagshot opened his account for the season when he pounced on a mix-up and fired home a powerful shot from the right side of the 'D'.

Seb Lewis extended the lead ten minutes later when the home 'keeper somehow failed to repel a very timid shot following a free hit taken quickly by Gareth Morris. Barlaston took a two goal lead into the break.

Yardley pulled one back early in the second period when Mark Rushton and Ben Forrester failed to clear their lines allowing their centre forward unobstructed access to fire past Mark Roe in the Barlaston goal. Yardley could easily have drawn level but Pilling sealed his man of the match performance with two goal line clearances before Lewis calmed the nerves with his second strike.

If anything Lewis' second goal was even worse than his first. A very weak dragflick from a short-corner deceived the keeper with it's lack of pace and trickled through his legs, coming to rest barely an inch over the line.

Barlaston finally found their stride in the closing period and created a number of good scoring chances, but failed to extend their lead as Lewis continued his miserable afternoon (despite scoring two goals) by squandering a number of gilt-edged opportunities following good work from Fred Marsden.

Overall a poor performance but good enough to claim their second win and keep up hopes of a sucessful campaign.

Barlaston got off to a winning start in their DTZ West

unlikely source of Ben Forrester.

The young defender was given the short corner stiking
responsibilities and responded with three excellently
executed goals. Midway through the first half
Forrester stepped up and hammered a powerful shot into
the corner of the visitors goal to fully reward the
short corner won by Fred Marsden's right wing run.

After the break he repeated the trick, this time
converting a penalty corner following good play from
Steve Collins down the middle. He completed his
hat-trick ten minutes from time with an unstoppable
drag-flick into the roof of the net to seal a

Home vs Aston University
Won 4 – 1 (Collins, Bagshot, Hancock, Lawson)

Barlaston ended a fairly satisfactory season on a
winning note with a comfortable victory over Aston
University.

A scrappy first half saw few chances for either side
and it took until the half hour for Barlaston to take
the lead. Steve Collins ran into the ‘D’ from the
inside left position and hit an accurate shot into the
bottom corner.

The second half saw much more action and a number of
tempers frayed. Aston got back on level terms with a
goal that was hotly disputed by Barlaston skipper
Gareth Morris. Morris was livid when two decisions
went against him in rapid succession. He was then
brushed aside when making a weak challenge in a goal
mouth melee and watched in horror as Aston converted
from less than a yard out.

Things soon picked up for the home side, however,
thanks to Rob Bagshot who took his seasons goal tally
to a respectable seventeen when he scooped home a
rebound from his own snapshot. John Hancock extended
the lead and continued his scoring habit with a
powerful drive from a short corner. Hancock ended his
season with four goals from four First XI outings.

Jim Lawson sealed the game with the best move of the
match as Fred Marsden and Collins moved the ball
swiftly up the pitch and presented Lawson with a
reverse stick tap in. Lawson’s dive to meet the ball
was unnecessary showboating.

Centre-back Mark Rushton made his way up front for the
last ten minutes in a desperate bid to win a wager by
scoring a career high second goal in a season. A
flailing lunge and miss from point blank range was as
close as he came.

Despite not pushing for promotion this year the
emergence of six young players, all under eighteen,
promises much for the coming years and makes the
season on the whole a success.

Away vs Kingswinford
Lost 7 - 1 (Bagshot)

Despite taking an early lead Barlaston were swamped by
a superior Kingswinford side. Their cause was not
helped when defender Gareth Parry limped off after
five minutes leaving ten men to withstand the
onslaught, or when Rob Bagshot saw yellow further
reducing numbers to nine for the last ten minutes.

Bagshot opened the scoring after two minutes when his
cross shot was poorly dealt with by the home goal
keeper. The lead only lasted a few minutes when a
quickly taken free hit was neatly converted by
Kingwinford's danger-man Sandhu.

A quick flurry of goals followed as the home side took
advantage of the chaos caused by Parry's departure.
Two short corner strikes and a deflected free hit took
the score to 4 - 1 at half time.

Barlaston competed a little better in the second
period after a half time riot act reading from skipper
Gareth Morris. Brett Green saw a goal disallowed for a
foul by Bagshot and Seb Lewis saw a short corner
cleared off the line, but the home sides' pressure was
bound to tell before too long.

Another short corner strike and two incisive breaks
made the score an embarassing 7 - 1 with an hour
played. An increasing frustrated Bagshot then
committed his final foul of the afternoon and
Barlaston's nine remaining men feared a double figure
hiding could be in store. Some desperate defending and
inspired goal keeping from Mark Roe just managed to
avert a complete anhilation but there was little to
take form the trip and performances must improve for
the remainder of the campaign.

Drew 1 - 1 (Gareth Parry)

Barlaston played some decent hockey in the early part of this encounter but had to fight hard towards the end to earn a draw.

The first period saw some good movement and passing from the home side but little end product. It took them virtually the whole half before Fred Marsden presented Seb Lewis with the first clear cut opportunity, but Lewis pulled his shot just wide and the half remained scoreless.

Chaddersly enjoyed more possesion in the second period with their centre forward running Mark Rushton ragged at times. It took some uncompromising challenges from Gareth Parry and 'keeper MArk Roe to keep him at bay.

Parry then stepped up for a short corner. The routine was badly botched but Parry managed to fire off a weak shot. The ball was travelling well wide until an ill judged clearance from a defender gave Parry his first Barlaston goal, which he celebrated jubilantly and in a manner ill befitting the actual strike.

The scores were level within minutes following an equally unimpressive Chaddersly short corner. Roe made a decent save only to see the rebound balloon up and strike a number of feet before it was bundled over the line.

Neither side made a particularly good case for winning the game but the visitors came closest when Parry was called upon to make an excellent stop on the line from a well executed dragflicked short corner. Parry confirmed his man of the match status by saving again from the rebound before clearing the danger calmly.

Home vs Kynoch
Won 5 - 1 (Seb Lewis 2, Brett Green, Gareth Morris, Steve Collins)

Barlaston comfortably overwhelmed an under strength Kynoch side in a game that ended sourly with a number of players involved in a bad tempered altercation.

Seb Lewis opened the scoring after ten minutes when Gareth Morris took a quick free hit which Lewis deflected past the goalkeeper. Kynoch were soon on terms when a right wing cross was converted at the far post with defender Mark Rushton looking perplexed after losing his man. Rushton atoned for his error within a few minutes when his long ball from the back found Lewis who ran unchecked into the D and saw a mishit shot wrong foot the goalkeeper to make the halftime score 2 - 1 to the home side.

Barlaston toiled in the early part of the second period and saw a number of simple passes go stray. Midfilder Steve Collins was becoming particularly frustrated with his teammates until a rare accurate pass from Tom Simcock picked him out and he slotted home from close range. After this Barlaston improved slightly and Brett Green extended the lead with a reverse stick finish after exchanging passes with Lewis.

The game turned ugly ten minutes from time when a violent tackle in the Kynoch D on Morris saw sticks and fists raised in the ensuing melee. After a lengthy delay Kynoch were reduced to ten men and Morris converted the short corner awarded for the foul. Some unsavoury gloating from Morris did little to calm the situation and a second confrontation broke out.

It was with some relief that the umpires blew for full time a few minutes later to bring to an end a game that was spiralling out of control. Barlaston move to fourth place in West Midlands Division 2 and remain outsiders in the hunt for a promotion place.

Won 8 - 1 (S. Lewis 3, G. Morris 2, R. Bagshot 2, S. Collins)

Barlaston enjoyed their biggest win of the season and moved into third position in Coaching Solutions West Midlands Division Two with this victory over an under strength Standard side.

Despite early Barlaston pressure Standard took the lead after five minutes when a persistent run from their centre-forward was rewarded by a looping deflection from Mark Rushton's stick which helped his reverse stick shot balloon over a surprised Mark Roe in the home goal. Seb Lewis soon replied with a poached reverse stick finish of his own to level the scores on the quarter hour.

Gareth Morris then turned in a well worked short corner to put Barlaston into the lead and Lewis completed a first half hat-trick with two more close range conversions to all but end the match as a contest. Rob Bagshot fired in the first of his brace right on the stroke of half-time and Barlaston took an unassailable 5 - 1 lead into the break.

Standard fought hard and defended well in the second period and it wasn't until the 60th minute that the home side added to their tally, with Morris picking up the ball on the top of the 'D' and firing in an excellent reverse stick shot. Steve Collins then profited from some good work by Tom Simcock and had the easy task of rolling into an empty net for his goal. Bagshot then finished the game with a flourish as he powered in a fierce short-corner strike to make the final score 8 - 1.
